Everything you need to know to have a gemstone party full of the real gems – Friends!

This is your all included go-to place for gem party planning. Refine your theme, select your venue, decorations, invites, foods, entertainment, favors, and even music.  A gem party is much easier and more versatile than you think!

Is Your Free Checklist Ready?

1: Gem Aesthetic & Venue

Pick an Aesthetic:  Multi-Colored, Rainbow, Galaxy, Glow in the Dark, Fluorescent, Neon, Iridescent, Pastels, and Shiny, to name a few.

Pick a Place:  Homes, Backyards, Museums, Parks, Pools, Nature Centers, Art Centers, Dinosaur Centers, Ranches, Gardens, Farms, Historic Sites, Lodges, and Colleges.

Send the Invites:  You can use our free digital invites, print it out and fill it in.  Use can use only text messages, or use hybrid methods.  You can also buy individual personalized postcard invites to send in the mail or pass out.  There is no wrong way to invite friends to a gem party! 

Get the Guest of Honor Ready:  Time to raid the closet and drawers for planning the party outfit!  Consider colors that match the gem aesthetic, themed shirt, gemstone jewelry, gemmy flare, buttons, hair accessories, gem leggings, even a full costume, and makeup or face painting supplies.

2: Gem Party Food Serving Ideas

Table Set Up:  Start with table cloths, trivets, and centerpieces.  Of course you’ll need plates, napkins, and cutlery with colors that match the party.  You may, or may not, need cups depending on if all your drinks are already in cans, pouches, or bottles.  A themed can cooler would be so cool (pun intended) for the party guest of honor.

Decorative Table Signs: Decorate small sealed bottles filled with colored water, glitter, and oil made to match the gem theme (i.e. rainbow, sparkle), then tape (or glue) free printable food labels to them.

Drinks:  Mineral waters (with, or without, free labels), shimmering punch, mocktails on the rocks, rock candy stir sticks, gem stickers on cups to identify whose is whose.

Dessert: Cupcakes with themed toppers and gem sprinkles, edible gems, sugar rock candy, and gemstone shaped cookies.

Build Your Own Gem Brownie Bar: Brownie bits, pudding, tapioca pudding, chocolate gems, glitter sprinkles, colorful crushed cookies, whipped cream, colored popcorn, nuts, and syrups.

Food Stuffs: Melon balls, ‘gemstone geode’ meatballs, multi-colored roasted fingerling potatoes, ‘gem’ stuffed shells, colorful fun shaped pasta with silky sauces. 

Snacky Bowls: Chocolate kisses (with stickers on bottom), rocky party mix with rock-like add ins such as crunchy cereals, unique crackers, fun gem shaped cheese, make gemstone shapes with charcuterie board items.

3: Gem Party Decorations

Find Stuff Around the House: Start by seeing what you may already have on hand that will work: Salt lamps, black lights, lava lamps, wooden crates, pillows, stuffed animals, blankets, jars, tools, ribbon, treasures, antiques, plants, rustic items, sparkly items, table cloths, and candles.

Outside Welcome:  Yard signs, balloons, door sign and decor, colorful lighting, sidewalk chalk designs, and gemmy footprints leading the way.

Arrival Table:  You may want to provide a small table upon entry for providing any needed tickets, stickers, activity sheets, craft supplies, even “Hello my name is” stickers, and markers for any additional identification needs.  You could also include a journal book for guests to sign and put greetings into.

Room Decor:  Go for colors that support the theme and use staples such as balloons and streamers, then unite it all with specific theme cutouts, banners, stickers, and signage.  Add flare to the lighting, such as special bulbs, or additional strings of light.

Centerpieces:  Matching candles with gems around them, a large gem as a cool balloon anchor, vases filled with gems then add flags, stationary balloons, or signs sticking out of them, and ornaments tied onto a gem themed gift box or treasure chest.

Centerpiece that Doubles as a Game: Decorate a jar filled with gems and guests guess how many are in the jar and closest wins a prize.  You can use our free printable sign.  Add a flameless tealight and finish awesome!

Stickers:  Put gem stickers on jars, bottles, decor items, signs, party favors, serving tray labels, and more.

4: Gem Party Activities

Gem Mining Area:  Set up gemstone hunting with a sandbox (or pool with sand).  Provide tools- shovels, sifters, gold pans, buckets, and brushes.

Pet Rock Station: Host a pet rock adoption area with choice of one special gem (or crystal) optional to add eyes or other features, and other caretaking items, then have guest complete a certificate; and finally take home in a small take home box or bag.

Photo Booth: You'll need some sort of backdrop; try combining some of these: curtains, balloons, streamers, posters, flags, wall decor, fabric, rugs, or photography backdrops.

Offer costumes and accessories, such masks, lab coats, as adventure style gear, dungarees, safari hats, wigs, wings, capes, hard hats, vests, belts, tools, boots, shaped pillows, large gems, bold scarves, fun DIY headbands, and science gear.

Background Ideas – Gemstone mines, surreal landscapes, stunning rock formations, gem filled caves, and treasure islands.

Cameras - Cellphones are accessible, polaroids are fun, and disposables are retro and a surprise for later.

Outdoor Adventure: This could be the perfect opportunity to go geocaching or letterboxing somewhere nearby.  Or you could hide gem treasures yourself in the backyard, or at the park, and let the guests find a certain amount each.  Perhaps harder to find ones are a bit pricier, or clues and/or maps are given.

Indoor Adventure: Scavenger hunt time! Provide a list of themed things (how long depends of the age group) for guests to find around the party areas, such as “teddy bear with birthday shirt”, “miner with patch”, “three gold balloons together”, “blue footprint”, etc.

Making Gemmy Rocks: Use play doughs or clay bases and add all sorts of mix ins as appropriate, such as marbles, cool shells, colorful stones, faux gems, glitter, paper scraps, confetti, and sand.

Growing Crystals: Borax crystal growing on pipe cleaners is a fun activity where the crystals grow pretty quickly.  Other crystal growing options that are safe and fun but take longer: salt, sugar, alum, or Epsom salt.

Making Jewelry: The possibilities are endless; gemstone bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and so much more.  To make this a quicker activity you can affordably buy a bunch of gemstone cage necklaces and have guests pick their own color and gemstone.

Geode Smashing: Sure to be hit! (pun intended) Safety is very important with this one, and have extras in case there is a dud or if the smashing otherwise goes sideways.

Rock Painting: Start this one early to give time to let the paint dry.  I don't recommend markers for this as the results will be mixed and we only want happy guests!  Have plenty of flat rocks on hand in case there is a mistake and so they have more choices when they pick their stone.

Themed Face Painting: A classic for kids’ parties, but works for teens and adults too, all you have to do is give the guests a list of options that they would like.  Swirls and gem shapes too can go a long way.  You will want an artist to help with this; up to you if you want a professional.

Themed Pinata: Probably save this toward the end to encourage the goodies to be taken home to be played with or eaten.  Pinatas are shaped cardboard with cool streamers and papers on top.  Thanks to gems’ sharp edges it might be possible to DIY one more easily.

Side Activities: Free coloring pages, stacking stones, gem garden in the sand, sidewalk chalk, play something on tv that goes with the theme (such as brief documentaries or animated shorts), play Gem Paper Scissors, or have a themed tattoo station.

Gem Origami: Probably best for older guests, but using colorful gem themed paper try some gemstone and crystal origami designs; there are many types and skill level options available.  If time allows have one already made as a sample (& décor!)

5: Gem Party Music

Karaoke:  If you have any mics, speakers, party boxes, Bluetooth speakers, karaoke gear, dance lighting, or any other means of making sing-a-long fun, now is the time to bust it all out!

A Band:  You could also bust out musical gear and instruments and let the guests make music, and sing.  This could be additional to Karaoke or just instrumental.  Or you could always hire a professional band or DJ!

Crystal Sound Bath:  Crystal bowls, and other crystal instruments, are becoming more popular for creating mediative and healing sounds.  You could hire someone to provide a mediation session; this would be great for teens and older.

Pick Your Theme Songs:  Such as; Shine Bright Like a Diamond, Treasure, Sparkle, Emerald, or even songs by Jewel.

Pick Your 'Rock' Songs:  We Will Rock You, I am a Rock, Rock Steady, Rock Me Amedus, Rock With You

Make a Playlist:  This is a sure way to be certain the songs are filtered as needed.  Add all the primary theme songs, then include songs related to the occasion, season, or holiday, such as songs wishing the guest of honor a happy birthday. 

6: Gem Party Favors

Pick Your Holders: Traditional bags or boxes, mini buckets, shiny cellophane, tiny baskets, drawstring bags, gem pouches, or treasure chests.

Pick Your Treats: Pop Rocks, rock candy, chocolate gems, chocolate coins, shiny wrapped candy, coal candy, Ring Pops, and candy necklaces.

Pick Your Loot: Tattoos, stickers, small gemstones or minerals, faux gems and treasures, nice shells, gem design pencils, themed buttons, patches, and mini magnifying glasses (‘loops’).

Pick Your Closures: If needed or wanted you can use curling ribbon, twine, ribbon, nice tape, pipe cleaners, wire, rubber bands, hair ties, clips, yarn, etc. And feel free to add gem beads too!

7: Gem Gifts

Open Gifts: Watching the guest of honor open their gifts is part of the fun! Gem themed gifts of course are perfect and thoughtful.

Wrappings:  Sure to be a hit would be themed reusable bags, or wrapping paper.  You could use their favorite colors and add stamps or stickers to create a very cool wrapping or gift bag.  Remember, any paper can be used for wrapping!  Even tin foil or wax paper could be perfect with the right theme and presentation.  Small gifts can be wrapped in our free printable 8x11 paper.  Craft and scrapbooking papers or bags could also do the job for small gifts.

Pick Your Closures and Embellishments: If needed or wanted you can add curling ribbon, twine, ribbon, nice tape, yarn, strips of fabric, or even a cool lanyard with themed badge. Adding embellishments is great too: gem beads, small toys, gem designed ornaments, flowers, small bottles of gemstones, gemstone charms, or add a free printable tag.
